Passage: Matthew 1:1-16

The Short Story:

Jimmy can sing the genealogy of Jesus. The end. Thank you all for coming! đź‘‹

Just kidding…

Today we’re discussing the genealogy of Jesus Christ from Abraham to Joseph!

Questions we ask ourselves after a passage like this:

  • Why should we care about genealogies? Why do they matter?

  • Why memorize the genealogy of Jesus Christ?

  • Why is Joseph included in Jesus’ genealogy?

Thinking it through:

What an excellent illustration of God’s sovereignty! God had preplanned humankind’s redemption story before creation. Throughout the Old Testament, He reveals pieces of who the Messiah is and how He would redeem us.

And then He sends His Son. What a sacrifice.

Another picture of God’s sovereignty is His plan to graft in the Gentiles. Here in Matthew, the author uniquely includes non-Israelite women in this genealogy! God repeatedly protected this line of David that led to the Messiah. But God is so faithful to His promises! Praise God!!

Application questions:

  • The Jews were looking for the Messiah and were familiar with some qualifications of someone being the Messiah. What were some of the signs that Jesus was the Messiah?

  • Jesus was a human being who walked the earth. Same as us. The Bible documents these historical events. Take a few moments to consider the sacrifice Jesus made in coming to earth and submitting Himself to human limitations.

  • How does Joseph being included in Jesus’ genealogy speak to the validation of adoption in our lives today?

  • Dedicate some time to memorizing Psalm 47:6-9.

We couldn’t answer every question about this passage but we certainly hope we helped! Want to ask more questions? Email question@clearlypodcast.com.
