Real Power for Lasting Change

We naturally gravitate to five-step plans or self-help advice to bring about change in our own lives. But Galatians 5 reminds us that lasting transformation comes not as we follow a to-do list, but as we walk with a Person. You can listen to this message on YouTube and find the outline for the talk below.

TEXT: Galatians 5:16-25

I. Three things to notice in this passage

  1. There are only 2 powers at work in us.

  2. The flesh and the Spirit don’t get along

  3. There’s just one command

II. Self-help is good news that can’t deliver

III. How do we walk by the Spirit?

  1. What does walking mean?

  2. Who is the Spirit?

    1. He’s a Person

    2. He’s God

    3. He’s with you. Forever!

    4. He has a specific role

IV. Are you self-dependent or Spirit-dependent?

  1. Self-dependent people focus on rules. Spirit-dependent people focus on Christ.

  2. Self-dependent people look inward for strength. Spirit-dependent people look outward for strength.

  3. Self-dependent people believe they are spiritually wealthy. Spirit-dependent people know they are spiritually bankrupt.

  4. Self-dependent people seek to reform old ways. Spirit-dependent people seek to crucify old ways.
